Tim Petrovic has played just a little better each day of the Senior PGA. He opened with 72, then shot 69, and Saturday posted a 2-under 68, one shot off Steve Stricker’s low round.
“Well that's the goal,” he said. “When I wake up in the morning I want to get a little better every day. So if that happens, I'll be in great shape with three or four holes to go tomorrow.
“Yeah, it's always a little thing here and there, and the first day I was just a little bit off and just didn't really make any putts. I think I made one birdie and it was a two-putt from like 4 feet (at the par-5 13th) because I missed my eagle putt. So it was one of those days. But just trying to get a little better every day and just hit greens, get the putter in my hand and see if we can make some birdies.”
He will play in Sunday’s penultimate group off the first hole, and trails Stricker by five shots. One of the players in Petrovic’s threesome on Sunday will be Jerry Kelly. He and Petrovic are both products from the University of Hartford, not exactly a golf hotbed. Kelly was leaving the media interview area as Petrovic stepped in, and they were asked what’s the name of Hartford’s mascot? “Hawks,” they said in unison.
Now that’s teamwork.
