Jerry Kelly has become one of the top players on the PGA Tour Champions, finding his way into contention on practically a weekly basis. The PGA Professional that has helped him get there is Jim Schuman, 57, PGA Director of Instruction at Bluemound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa, Wis. This week, Schuman not only is coaching Kelly, but competing against him too, one of 40 Club Professionals who are represented in the 156-man starting field. Schuman was only five holes into his afternoon round when inclement weather suspended play.
“We have really helped each other quite a bit,” Kelly said. “He tends to slow down in some of the tournaments and I'm trying to get him jacked up and understand his game is world class. I mean, he could definitely hang.
“He's got an incredible swing, when he puts that swing into his game, that's when you see it. I mean, he beats me like a drum, day-in and day-out, outside of tournaments. So I know it's there. He works with “swing” with me, and I kind of work on “playing” with him. So we learn a lot from each other.”
